According to the CDC's National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2017 30.3 million (9.4%) people in the US have diabetes. An additional 8.4 million people within the nation are classified as pre-diabetic. 

Individuals with diabetes are often at increased risk to periodontal diseases. This is due to factors such as decreased vasculature, troubles with wound healing, and overall increased risk of infection.
